Why BlipCode Only Makes Static QR Codes
BlipCode only makes static QR codes. This page explains what that means, when dynamic is genuinely the right pick, and why we chose the side we did.
A dynamic QR code is a QR pointing to a URL like qrcode-service.com/abc123. When someone scans it, the service redirects them to your actual destination. The advantage: you can change the destination after the code is already printed.
For that to work, the service has to stay online, keep serving the redirect, and log every scan.
A static QR code contains your actual destination (a URL, some text, a Wi-Fi handshake, a contact card) directly in the black and white pattern. Nothing sits between the scan and the destination.
No service to keep online. No scan log. No redirect that can break. The destination is locked in the moment you generate the code.
We're not going to pretend dynamic is always wrong. There are real cases where it's the right tool:
- You need to change the destination after the QR is printed: restaurants swapping menus, campaigns rotating landing pages.
- You need scan analytics: marketing teams measuring conversion, event organizers counting attendance.
- Your destination is short-lived and the QR isn't: the URL you'd encode today won't exist next year, but the sticker will.
For those uses, a dynamic service is the right tool. We're not it.
- Personal use: sharing your Wi-Fi with guests, your contact card at events, a link on a business card.
- Stable destinations: a company's homepage, a permanent form, a government portal.
- Anything you'd rather not have a third party in the middle of every scan of.
- Anything you don't want to depend on a paid service continuing to exist.
A dynamic QR code requires a running business between the person scanning and the destination. That business typically logs every scan. That business can go under and take every code with it. That business can change its terms.
We didn't want to be that business. If we ever go under, we don't want your QR codes going with us. And we don't want to sell subscriptions whose real dependency is our continued existence.
So we only make static. If static doesn't fit your case, dynamic services exist for that. If it does, we're happy to keep making them.
